Your silence will not protect you."

We are a group of therapy abuse survivors based in New York who found each other through social media. We believe in the power of connection and the importance of telling silenced stories. Therapy can be a profoundly lonely experience – often there are no online reviews for therapists, and no way to connect with other patients to understand if your experience is shared. But by sharing our stories, we discover that our experiences are not as unique or shameful as we once thought.
Currently, in the United States, legal action against an abusive therapist is only possible in cases of physical or sexual violence. The “gray” area of emotional violence is difficult to prove and often considered subjective, yet it is the most common form of abuse within the clinic’s walls. This lack of accountability makes therapy an ideal profession for individuals with abusive tendencies, exacerbated by the profession’s significant lack of regulation and supervision. Our goal is to amplify the #TherapyToo movement through social media, mainstream media, and eventually, policy change. We are here to challenge the current perception of therapy, demonstrating that it can carry dangers akin to those of an unsupervised psychiatric ward.
Our commitment: This initiative is especially committed to telling the stories of marginalized groups. We acknowledge that many survivors have been harmed by therapists who lack the understanding and training necessary to treat people dealing with challenges vastly different from their own. This includes, but is not limited to, women, femmes, indigenous people and POC, folks of the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, disabled and neurodivergent individuals, and those living with personality disorders, and PTSD. We want to ensure that every voice is heard, especially those often overlooked or misunderstood.
Your silence will not protect you."
